Frequently asked questions

How does smoke machine hire work?
Simple. You book online or via WhatsApp, we confirm your date, and we deliver the machine to your venue before your event starts. Our team sets it up in the spot you've chosen, shows you how to operate it, and collects everything once you're done. You focus on the party — we handle the logistics.
What's included with a smoke machine hire?
The hire includes the smoke machine and fog fluid for your event. You don't need to source fluid separately — we bring what you need for the duration of the booking. If your event runs long or you want heavier continuous output, let us know when booking so we can factor that in.
How much fog does the machine produce, and how long does a tank of fluid last?
Our hire machines are event-grade units — they produce a solid, consistent output that fills a room or dance floor quickly. Fluid consumption depends on how heavily you run the machine: moderate, intermittent use across a 4-hour event typically uses between 500ml and 1 litre of fluid. Continuous full-blast output will burn through fluid faster. We supply enough fluid for typical event use; if you're planning a particularly fog-heavy setup — like a full-length theatrical production or an extended photo shoot — mention it when you book.
Do you deliver and set up the smoke machine?
Yes. We deliver to your venue, position and set up the machine, and collect everything after your event. Please have the spot cleared and ready before we arrive. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounds — delivery fees apply based on distance from our depot. If you're unsure whether your area is covered, send us a message before booking.
Can I collect the smoke machine myself instead of paying for delivery?
Yes. You're welcome to collect from our depot and return it the next day — it saves the delivery fee entirely. Our team will run you through setup and operation at collection. Come prepared with a blanket or padding to protect the machine in your vehicle and make sure it can't slide around in transit.
What are the power requirements for the smoke machine?
Our smoke machines run off a standard 220V South African plug point — no special wiring or generator required. The machines draw between 400W and 1,000W depending on the unit, so a standard household or venue circuit handles them without issue. Just make sure there's a plug point within a reasonable reach of where you want it set up. If your venue has older wiring and you're running multiple high-draw appliances on the same circuit, give us a heads-up so we can advise.
How long does the smoke machine take to warm up before it produces fog?
Typically between 5 and 8 minutes from cold. Once the heating element reaches temperature, the machine produces fog almost immediately when triggered. It will cycle through brief reheat periods during use — this is normal. If you need fog from the first moment of your event, switch it on during setup rather than right as guests arrive.
Do I need a trained operator to run the smoke machine?
No — our machines are straightforward enough for anyone to operate. We show you everything at setup and the controls are simple. That said, if you'd rather have someone dedicated to managing the machine and effects throughout your event, we do offer an operator as an add-on. Operators are not included in the standard hire; ask about this when you book if it's something you'd like.
Do I need to clean the machine before it's returned?
No. Just make sure the machine has cooled down before we collect — don't attempt to pack or move it while it's hot. The fluid reservoir should be reasonably empty (we'll tell you what to do with any remaining fluid). We handle all cleaning and maintenance on our end.
Will a smoke machine set off the fire alarms at my venue?
This is the most important question to ask before any fog machine hire, and the honest answer is: it can. Many smoke detectors — particularly photoelectric types — respond to fog particles the same way they respond to actual smoke. A triggered alarm at a venue can result in an evacuation, a call-out from the fire service, and a fine from venue management. Before your event, contact your venue and ask whether the fire suppression system will be active. Some venues can isolate specific detectors in the area where the machine will be used; others require prior written notice. We strongly recommend confirming this with your venue before the day. We won't be responsible for false alarm incidents caused by fog output in venues where this hasn't been cleared.
Is the fog from a smoke machine safe to breathe?
Our machines use water-based fog fluid containing glycol or glycerine — the same type used in professional theatrical productions. These ingredients are non-toxic and not classified as harmful under normal event conditions. Most guests won't notice any effect beyond the visual. That said, people with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory sensitivities can find concentrated fog irritating — it may trigger coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness if they're standing in a dense cloud for extended periods. Keep the machine positioned away from seating areas, run ventilation fans if possible, and make sure anyone with a known respiratory condition knows the machine is in use so they can position themselves comfortably.
Are there any safety precautions I should take at the event?
A few straightforward ones. Keep children away from the nozzle — the output is not hot by the time it reaches the air, but the nozzle housing itself can get warm during extended use. Position the machine on a stable, flat surface where it won't be knocked over. Don't leave the machine running unattended in an enclosed room with young children. Make sure guests with respiratory conditions know fog is being used so they can manage their exposure. Otherwise, it's a simple and safe bit of kit.
Can I use a hired smoke machine indoors and outdoors?
Both work. Indoors, the fog builds up quickly and creates a more dramatic effect — great for dance floors, Halloween setups, or photo booths. Outdoors, the fog disperses faster in open air and any wind will break it up, so you'll cycle through fluid more quickly and the visual effect is shorter-lived. For outdoor events in Johannesburg and Pretoria where there's often a light evening breeze, positioning the machine in a sheltered spot makes a real difference. The machine itself should not be exposed to rain or moisture.
How far in advance should I book a smoke machine?
As soon as you have a date. Smoke machine hire for Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, and Pretoria is popular around Halloween, year-end school functions, matric dances, and December events — those periods fill up weeks in advance. For quiet midweek dates, a few days' notice is usually fine. For weekends, public holidays, or anything in October–December, book at least two to three weeks ahead. We can't hold dates without a booking, so earlier is always better.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Date changes are accommodated up to 2 weeks before your event, subject to availability — let us know as soon as you know, and we'll do our best to move things. Changes must be put in writing (WhatsApp or email is fine). If you cancel more than 7 working days before your event, you're entitled to a full refund. Cancellations within 7 working days of the event — the booking fee won't be refunded. Check our full terms when you book for the detail.
What events is a smoke machine hire well-suited for?
Quite a range. Halloween parties are the obvious one — smoke and low-lying fog are practically expected. Matric dances and year-end school events in Johannesburg and Pretoria use them on dance floors, where the combination with uplighting or a DJ's beam lights creates a proper atmosphere. UV and glow-in-the-dark parties look significantly better with a bit of haze in the air — the light beams become visible. Theatre productions, drama showcases, and photo shoots use them for dramatic effect. Corporate year-end functions and milestone parties (think 40th and 50th birthdays) also hire them for the entrance or dance floor moments. If you're combining it with our UV glow pack, disco lighting, or a dance floor setup, mention it when you enquire so we can suggest the right positioning.

What a smoke machine actually does for a space

A bit of haze in the air makes lighting visible. Without it, beams from a DJ rig, uplighting, or a UV setup just land on walls and floors — you see the effect but not the light itself moving through the space. With the right amount of fog in the room, those beams become visible columns, and the room looks like considerably more money was spent on lighting than actually was.

That's the practical reason most people hire a smoke machine. The atmosphere is a by-product of a physical reality: light scattering off fog particles. Knowing that means you can use it deliberately — short bursts to build haze before a big entrance, sustained output for a dance floor later in the evening, timed shots for a theatrical moment in a performance.

The fire alarm question — sort this first

Smoke machines trigger fire alarms. Not sometimes — consistently, if the detectors are photoelectric types, which most modern venues use. A triggered alarm at a function venue in Sandton or a school hall in Pretoria means a full evacuation, a potential fire service call-out, and a conversation with venue management that nobody wants mid-event.

Before you confirm smoke machine hire for any venue that isn't your own private property, contact the venue and ask whether fire suppression is active and whether specific detectors can be isolated for the event. Some venues manage this routinely for event hire. Others don't, and knowing that before the day is essential. If you're running it in a private home or garden in Johannesburg or Randburg with no commercial fire suppression system, it's generally not an issue — but confirm that before making assumptions.

Ventilation and how to use it well

A smoke machine needs airflow to clear between moments. A completely sealed room with no ventilation will accumulate fog throughout the event — not necessarily dramatic, just persistently hazy, which is fine for some events and uncomfortable for others. If the plan is a clear room with occasional fog effects, the venue needs to be able to breathe between bursts.

For dance floor setups in Midrand or Johannesburg, pointing a small fan low across the floor while the machine runs keeps the fog close to ground level and disperses it upward naturally. That low-lying fog effect, combined with the lighting above it, is the look most hirers are going for. Without the fan, the fog rises and fills the upper half of the room — a different effect, and sometimes exactly what's needed, but worth knowing the difference.

People with asthma or respiratory sensitivities can find concentrated fog irritating after extended exposure. Keep the machine positioned away from seating areas and seated guests, and make sure anyone with a known condition knows it will be in use.

Smoke machine hire alongside a UV pack

UV glow party pack hire and a smoke machine are regularly booked together for a reason. UV light beams become visible in haze the same way conventional lighting does — the atmospheric effect of a glow party increases significantly with fog in the air. For a matric dance, a teen birthday party, or a themed event in Sandton or Pretoria, the combination makes the lighting setup look genuinely professional at a fraction of a professional production cost.

For Halloween parties, the smoke machine is close to mandatory. Low-lying fog in a darkened entrance, combined with any kind of atmospheric lighting, produces the right effect reliably.

What you're actually hiring

Smoke machine hire includes the machine and fog fluid for your event. The fluid is water-based, glycol or glycerine-based, non-toxic — the same chemistry used in professional theatrical productions. The machine draws between 400W and 1,000W from a standard 220V plug point, needs around 5–8 minutes to heat up from cold, and then produces fog on demand. Switch it on during setup, not as guests arrive, so it's ready when you need it.

Operators are available as an add-on for events where you'd prefer someone dedicated to managing the machine and its timing throughout the event — useful for longer functions or theatrical productions. An operator is not included in the standard smoke machine rental. Ask about it when you book.
