Frequently asked questions

How does outdoor cinema hire work?
You book the outdoor cinema setup, and we handle the rest. Our team delivers the inflatable screen, projector, and sound system to your venue, inflates and positions the screen, sets up the audio, and runs a full test before leaving. You bring the movie. Once the sun goes down, guests settle in and the evening takes care of itself. We collect the gear the following day.
What’s included with outdoor cinema hire?
The hire covers the inflatable screen, a high-lumen projector, a proper sound system and all cabling. You’ll use your own laptop to play the movie and connect via HDMI (this is the most reliable option). If you prefer a DVD player, we can bring one — just let us know in advance so we pack it for your booking. If you’re planning to stream from Netflix or another service, you’ll need your own device and a confirmed reliable signal at the venue. Test the connection at the venue location specifically before the event — garden Wi-Fi can be spotty at the far end of a property.
How big is the outdoor cinema screen?
Most tiers use a 3.6 × 2.4 m inflatable (~12 ft visual class), which is ideal for picnic-style seating of up to ~50 lounging viewers when spaced sensibly. Our Big Screen Cinema is roughly 20 ft (5 × 3.7 m), which suits schools, estates, or community lawns expecting closer to two hundred viewers. Please mention which screen size you were quoted so viewing distances stay realistic.
When does the outdoor cinema need to start?
The start time is set by the light, not the clock. In daylight (and even bright dusk), the image will look washed out — you’ll get the best picture once it’s properly dark.

In Johannesburg and Pretoria, that usually means:

- Oct–Feb: plan to start the movie around 19:30–20:00
- Jun–Jul: you can often start from around 18:00–18:30

We suggest planning your “social” time first (snacks, drinks, lawn games, settling in), then letting the moment the screen pops to life be your natural cue to start the movie.
Do you deliver and set up the outdoor cinema equipment?
Yes — delivery and full setup is how outdoor cinema hire works. Our team delivers to your venue, inflates and stakes the screen, positions the projector, connects the sound, and does a test run before leaving you to it. Have your garden cleared and know where you want the screen before we arrive — once it’s up and staked, repositioning is a 20-minute job you don’t want to do. You’ll need a 220V supply within 25 metres of the screen position. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria, and surrounds; fees apply based on your distance from our depot.
Can we collect the outdoor cinema equipment ourselves?
Yes — collection is possible, but it’s best suited to people who already know what they’re doing. The screen does pack down into a bag, but the real challenge is setting everything up correctly at the venue: inflating and staking the screen securely, positioning the projector, connecting the sound, running power safely, and doing a proper test before guests arrive.

If you’re confident with AV setup and you’re happy to handle the full setup and troubleshooting on the day, collection can be arranged. If not, we strongly recommend delivery and setup — it’s the easiest way to make sure the picture and sound are right and the night runs smoothly.
What power does the outdoor cinema setup need?
Standard 220V South African supply. You’ll need at least two plug points accessible from the setup area — one for the projector, one for the sound system. Both should be within approximately 25 metres of where the screen is positioned. If your closest outdoor outlets are further away, a heavy-duty extension lead bridges the gap.
How long does it take to set up the outdoor cinema?
Setup typically takes around 60–90 minutes, depending on the package and the site. We usually arrive in the early afternoon on the day to allow a comfortable buffer for setup and testing.

The biggest thing that helps is having the area cleared and accessible before we arrive (ready for the screen position, with a clear path for bringing equipment in). We also need a contact person on site so we can run through the controls and handover before we leave.

If your package includes blankets, pillows, or décor, please allow a little extra time for setup.
What can I screen on the outdoor cinema?
Anything you can output via HDMI. A laptop connected via HDMI is the most reliable and flexible option — it handles streaming services, downloaded files, and local media without any compatibility issues. USB playback also works for common file formats (MP4 is usually the safest). If you’re streaming, confirm your device is connected to the venue Wi‑Fi and test the stream from the actual screen position, not from inside the house. Outdoor cinema hire works best with a downloaded file rather than relying on live streaming — there’s no good moment for the movie to buffer mid-scene.

If you’re hosting a public screening (for example, charging for tickets, fundraising, or advertising an open invite), you may need a public screening licence for the film.
Do I need a licence to play a movie at my event?
It depends on whether it’s a private viewing or a public screening. A private movie night for your own guests (for example at a home, private party, or invite-only event with no ticket sales) is usually treated differently from a public screening.

If you’re charging admission, fundraising, or promoting the screening to the public, you’ll generally need a licence for public exhibition. In South Africa, licensing is commonly arranged through MPLC (Motion Picture Licensing Company) via a Title-by-Title / Single Title Movie Licence (they offer options for both non-commercial screenings and commercial screenings where admission is charged). Please arrange the licence before your event if it applies.
What happens if it’s windy or raining on the night?
If it rains, the event cannot run — speakers and projectors cannot get wet. If the forecast is uncertain in the days leading up to your event, decide on a contingency plan: either a large open-sided marquee to shelter the setup, or an indoor location. Don’t leave the backup plan as “we’ll figure it out on the day” — it rarely works out. Wind is manageable within limits. The screen is staked, and a light breeze is fine. Sustained strong wind creates safety concerns, and the screen may need to be taken down.
Do I need someone to run the cinema setup?
For a straightforward outdoor movie night, no — once we’ve set up, tested, and handed over, pressing play and adjusting the volume is all that’s needed. Most garden cinema hire bookings run smoothly without any dedicated operator. If you’d rather not have to think about it at all — especially at a larger event, or one where technical issues would genuinely disrupt the evening — an on-site operator is available as an add-on. Not included in the standard hire. Worth it if the outdoor cinema is the centrepiece of the event rather than background entertainment.
How far in advance should I book outdoor cinema hire?
Early, particularly from October to January. Outdoor cinema hire in Johannesburg peaks heavily over summer weekends — garden parties, year-end functions, and December holiday movie nights all cluster in the same window. Outside of summer, two to three weeks is usually sufficient, though there’s genuinely no downside to booking early.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Notify us in writing as soon as you know. Changes more than two weeks before the event can usually be accommodated, subject to availability on the new date. Inside two weeks we’ll try, but can’t guarantee the equipment is free on your preferred date. Cancellations more than 7 working days before the event qualify for a full refund. Cancel within 7 working days and the booking fee is not refunded.
What events is outdoor cinema hire suited to?
Any event where people will be outside after dark and you want something to anchor the evening. Birthday parties — particularly milestone birthdays — where a garden movie night replaces a conventional party format. School holiday movie nights for kids during the June and December breaks. Year-end functions at homes in Sandton, Midrand, and Pretoria where an outdoor cinema adds something different from the standard braai setup. Churches and community organisations in Randburg and surrounding areas use outdoor cinema for public events and fundraisers. Pair with a popcorn machine hire and [slush machine] for the full movie night experience — it’s one of the most straightforward combinations we do, and guests notice the difference.
More about outdoor cinema hire randburg, johannesburg

Outdoor cinema hire that turns any space into a “wow” night

Outdoor cinema hire is one of those event ideas that sounds simple — and then completely surprises people with how special it feels. As soon as the big inflatable screen lights up, everyone naturally gathers: families settle in on blankets, friends stop scrolling and start watching, and an ordinary garden or venue lawn turns into a proper movie night.

If you’re planning a kids’ party, a school fundraiser, a community evening, or a corporate family day, outdoor cinema hire (or big screen rental) gives you a built-in main attraction that keeps guests entertained for hours.

Timing tips (sunset matters)

Johannesburg and Pretoria sunset times change a lot through the year:

- In midsummer, screenings usually start closer to 19:30–20:00
- In cooler months, you can often start nearer 18:00

If you need something for guests to do while you wait for darkness, plan a snack table, lawn games, or a pre-movie playlist — it keeps the energy up and makes the night feel like an experience, not just “a screen in a garden”.

What arrives with our big screen rental packages

Our outdoor cinema hire packages include the key equipment you need for a clean, reliable setup:

- Inflatable screen (projection surface)
- Projector
- Media kit + cabling
- Sound (PA) matched to the package tier

We inflate, position, stake, and test on site — for safety and reliability.

You supply the movie/content (laptop or media player). For outdoor cinema hire, HDMI from a laptop or a downloaded file is usually the most reliable option. Venue Wi‑Fi is often weaker outside than inside, so we don’t recommend depending on streaming unless you’ve tested it in the exact viewing spot.

How many guests does big screen rental suit?

Different screen sizes suit different crowds:

- Smaller screens are great for cosy backyard groups (roughly up to 50 guests on blankets/chairs)
- Bigger setups scale well for large lawns, school events, and community nights (roughly up to 200 guests depending on layout)

If you share your guest count and venue size, we’ll recommend the right outdoor cinema and audio option so the picture and sound work properly for the back rows.

Pairings that make outdoor cinema hire feel effortless

Outdoor cinema hire is even better with a few simple add-ons:

- Popcorn helps switch everyone into “cinema mode” fast
- Add slush machine hire for an easy, self-serve icy drinks station alongside the movie
- On chilly Highveld evenings, add outdoor gas heater hire to keep seating areas comfortable
- For big lawns and lively crowds, extra sound headroom keeps dialogue clear without strain

A quick prep checklist before we arrive

To keep setup fast and smooth, it helps to decide a few basics up front:

- Choose the screen position with clear sightlines
- Confirm where the nearest plug point is (and how we’ll safely route power)
- Avoid last-minute moves — repositioning an inflated screen can eat into your schedule

If your venue doesn’t have mains power within about 10 metres, let us know when you enquire so we can discuss generator options.

Weather reality (and how to plan around it)

Outdoor cinema hire is weather-dependent:

- Rain stops projection — the best plan is a backup option: marquee backup, or an indoor alternative
- Light breezes are usually fine, but strong gusts can affect the screen — we’ll advise based on your venue

Send your date, suburb, and estimated guest count, and we’ll quote outdoor cinema hire / big screen rental with delivery included.
