Frequently asked questions

How does chocolate fountain hire work?
You book the fountain, we deliver it to your venue, set it up, and collect it once your event is done. The hire includes the fountain, the chocolate, and your dipping items — everything arrives together. You don't need to source anything separately. We melt the chocolate before the fountain goes on so it's flowing and ready when your guests arrive.
What's included when I hire a chocolate fountain?
The hire includes the chocolate fountain itself, the chocolate (already prepared and ready to pour), and a selection of dipping items for the number of guests you've booked for. Typical dipping items include strawberries, marshmallows, pineapple chunks, and wafer biscuits — confirm the exact selection when you book. Serving skewers or picks are included. You don't need to bring anything; it all comes with the hire.
How many guests can a chocolate fountain serve?
It depends on the size of the fountain. As a general guide, plan for roughly 150–200g of chocolate per person. A smaller fountain suits gatherings of 20 to 50 guests; a larger unit handles 50 to 100 or more. If you're expecting a big crowd — say a wedding reception in Sandton or a corporate year-end function in Midrand — two or more fountains keep queues short and the flow going. Tell us your guest count when you enquire and we'll recommend the right size.
Do you deliver and set up the chocolate fountain?
Yes. We deliver to your venue, set the fountain up in the spot you've chosen, and collect everything once your event wraps up. The fountain needs to be positioned on a flat, stable table — not on the floor or an uneven surface — and it must be level or the chocolate won't flow properly. Please have the space cleared and a power point within reach before we arrive. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounding areas; delivery fees are charged by km from our depot.
Can we collect the chocolate fountain ourselves?
Yes, self-collection is available and saves the delivery fee. Our team will walk you through setup, operation, and safe transport when you collect. The fountain needs to travel upright and on a flat surface — please come with adequate space in your vehicle and strapping to keep it secure; we don't supply tie-downs. Return the fountain the following day as agreed at collection.
What are the power requirements for a hired chocolate fountain?
The fountain runs off a standard 220V South African plug point. Commercial chocolate fountains typically draw between 200 and 300 watts — less than a kettle, so it won't strain a normal domestic circuit on its own. You'll need the outlet within a reasonable distance of where you want the fountain set up; a 10-metre heavy-duty extension lead works if needed. Avoid sharing the circuit with a coffee urn, slush machine, or other high-draw appliances, particularly in older homes where breakers trip easily. If you're unsure about your venue's power situation, message us before the day and we'll help you plan it.
How long does it take for the chocolate fountain to be ready?
The fountain itself warms up in around 5 minutes, but the chocolate needs to be melted separately before it goes in — the fountain keeps chocolate warm and flowing, it doesn't melt it from scratch. We handle all of this when we set up, arriving ahead of your start time to get the chocolate flowing before guests arrive. Allow at least 30 to 45 minutes for us to set up, melt and add the chocolate, and confirm everything is running correctly.
Do we need a staff member to operate the chocolate fountain during the event?
You don't have to have one, but it's strongly recommended. A chocolate fountain left unattended at a busy party tends to attract small hands and enthusiastic dippers who may drop items into the bowl and affect the flow. One of your team can keep an eye on it if you'd prefer, but if you want the fountain running properly for the full event without any fuss, we do offer an operator as an add-on. Ask about staffed hire when you book — it's particularly worth it for weddings, corporate events, or anything where you don't want to manage it yourself on the day.
Who is responsible for cleaning the chocolate fountain?
Cleaning is on us. We handle the full breakdown and clean when we collect. What we ask is that guests use the skewers or picks provided and don't double-dip or drop food into the bowl — that clogs the pump and affects the flow during the event. If something does go wrong mid-hire and the fountain needs attention, call us and we'll advise.
Is a chocolate fountain safe to have at a party?
Yes, when managed sensibly. The chocolate and the fountain's heating element stay hot throughout the event — hot enough to cause a burn if someone reaches in or knocks the fountain over. Keep children supervised around it at all times, and position the fountain where it can't be bumped by guests walking past or running kids. We'll set it up on a stable surface, but a 5-year-old on a mission can get anywhere. Treat it the same way you'd treat any hot catering equipment — keep adults nearby while it's running.
Can a chocolate fountain be used outdoors?
Chocolate fountains are really best suited to indoor use. Wind is the main problem — even a light breeze scatters the chocolate off the tiers and onto guests, tablecloths, and anything nearby, and a stronger gust can stop the fountain flowing altogether. Heat and cold are secondary concerns: ambient temperature affects how the chocolate flows. If your event is outdoors, the fountain needs to be in a fully enclosed, sheltered spot — a marquee with sides, not just a gazebo. If you're not sure whether your outdoor space works, send us the details before you book and we'll give you an honest answer. For garden parties in Joburg where the venue is open, it's worth reconsidering the setup.
Does chocolate fountain hire involve any allergen risks?
Yes — and it's worth being upfront about this. Chocolate contains dairy, so the fountain is not suitable as-is for guests with a dairy allergy or who are lactose intolerant. We cannot guarantee a nut-free product either, as our chocolate supplier may operate in a facility that also processes nuts. If you have guests with serious allergies, request the full ingredient list when you enquire so you can make an informed call before the day. Don't rely on "it should be fine" for anyone with a medical-grade allergy.
What type of chocolate does the fountain use, and can we supply our own?
We use a commercial chocolate specifically formulated for fountains — it has the right viscosity to flow properly through the pump and tiers. Standard supermarket chocolate bars don't work well: they're not fluid enough and often seize up in the fountain. Milk chocolate is the default; dark or white chocolate may be available as an alternative — confirm when you book. If you have a preference or a specific chocolate product in mind, ask us when you enquire and we'll check whether it's compatible with our equipment.
How far in advance should I book a chocolate fountain?
As early as you can. Weekend bookings across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, and the surrounding areas fill up quickly — especially for weddings, matric dances, and corporate events. A week's notice is usually enough in quieter periods, but we can't guarantee availability for last-minute requests. For December — year-end functions, holiday parties, festive celebrations — book at least four to six weeks ahead. December books out faster than most people expect.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Date changes are accommodated up to 2 weeks before your event, subject to availability — get in touch as soon as you know so we can find an alternative date. All changes must be confirmed in writing. If you need to cancel more than 7 working days before your event, you'll receive a full refund. Cancellations within 7 working days of the event forfeit the booking fee. Check your booking confirmation for the complete terms.
What events is chocolate fountain hire a good fit for?
A chocolate fountain works at any event where you want a focal point that people gather around. Weddings and engagement parties are the most popular — it photographs beautifully and guests love it. But it's equally at home at kids' birthday parties, bat mitzvahs, matric after-parties, school year-end events, baby showers, and corporate year-end functions. We've set up chocolate fountain hire for events across Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Centurion, and Pretoria. It pairs well with a dessert table, a candy floss machine, or a popcorn station if you're building out a full fun food setup — ask us what else is available to add on.
More about chocolate fountain hire randburg, johannesburg

A focal point, not just a food station

Most party food sits on a table and waits. A chocolate fountain does the opposite — it moves, it catches light, and people position themselves near it without being asked to. At a wedding in Sandton, guests who don't know each other yet find themselves at the fountain together, both reaching for the same skewer, and suddenly there's a conversation. At a kids' party, it's the loudest corner of the room even before a single marshmallow has been dipped.

Chocolate fountain hire earns its place at an event partly because of what it does and partly because of how it looks. The tiers, the flowing curtain, the bowl underneath — it photographs well. For events where the table or sweet station features in photos, it's one of the more striking things you can hire.

Our hire includes the fountain, the chocolate (already prepared), and a selection of dipping items for your guest count — typically strawberries, marshmallows, pineapple chunks, and wafer biscuits, plus serving skewers. Everything arrives together. We melt the chocolate before the fountain goes on so it's flowing and ready when your guests arrive.

The flatness requirement is non-negotiable

A chocolate fountain circulates liquid chocolate through a pump and up a central column, then lets it cascade down over the tiers. If the surface it sits on is not level — even slightly off — the chocolate flows unevenly, pools on one side of each tier, and eventually the curtain breaks down on the low side. In serious cases, it flows off the side of the bowl.

This is the detail that most people don't think about until it's a problem. The fountain needs a flat, stable table. Not a folding table with one leg slightly sunken into garden grass. Not a surface that rocks when someone leans on it. A solid, level table, indoors or on a hard floor.

If your venue is a garden event and you're planning to set the fountain up on a grass surface, check whether you have a solid table that can go outside, or let us know when you book and we'll talk through options. We've done chocolate fountain hire at garden weddings and outdoor events across Johannesburg and Pretoria — it works, but the surface question needs an answer first.

Why wind is the fountain's other enemy

The FAQs cover the indoor/outdoor situation in detail, but the short version for copy here is worth saying plainly: a chocolate fountain and wind do not belong together.

A light breeze deflects the chocolate curtain. A moderate one scatters it. The chocolate ends up on the tablecloth, on the guests nearest the fountain, and on the floor rather than into the bowl. That's not a recoverable situation mid-event.

For outdoor events where a fountain is non-negotiable, the requirement is a fully enclosed space — a marquee with sides down, a covered patio with walls on at least three sides, not just a roof. A corner of a garden with a pergola above and open sides is not sufficient on most Joburg days. If the setup genuinely works, it'll be great. If it doesn't, the evening becomes a cleaning exercise.

For garden events in Randburg and Midrand where the weather is unpredictable, we'd rather have an honest conversation before you book than a difficult one on the day.

An operator makes a real difference here

With a popcorn machine or a slush machine, self-operation is genuinely simple. A chocolate fountain is different. The dipping items need to be replenished and arranged. Dropped food needs to be fished out of the bowl before it clogs the pump. Guests who double-dip, or drop a whole strawberry in, need to be managed. The chocolate itself needs to be topped up as the evening goes on and levels drop.

None of this is technically difficult, but it adds up to a job that occupies one person for most of the event. That might be someone on your team, or it might be a family member drafted in — which is absolutely fine for a birthday party in Johannesburg. For a wedding in Pretoria, a corporate year-end function in Sandton, or any event where you want the fountain to run faultlessly for four or five hours without anyone from the hosting side managing it, an operator add-on is worth the cost.

We offer staffed chocolate fountain hire as an optional extra. It's not included in the standard hire. Ask about it when you book.

What chocolate fountain hire pairs with

A chocolate fountain is already a statement. Alongside the right additions, it anchors a full dessert or sweet station.

A candy floss station alongside a fountain creates a full sweet corner that guests respond to warmly — for weddings and matric events, that combination turns a corner of the venue into a destination. For an event with a bar setup, pairing the fountain with rustic bar hire in the same area creates a social corner that keeps guests lingering.
