Frequently asked questions

How does outdoor gas heater hire work?
Book the number of heaters you need. We deliver them to your venue, position them where they work best for your layout, connect the gas, and run a quick test before we leave. All you need to do is show our team where you want the setup area. We collect after the event.
What’s included in the outdoor heater hire — is gas included?
Each mushroom heater tier includes the upright unit and the first filled 9 kg cylinder. Pricing is intentionally split between the equipment and cylinder for transparency. For very long hires, we quote additional cylinders upfront so you can plan refills in advance.
How many gas heaters do I need for my event?
Each mushroom patio heater warms a zone of roughly 3 to 4 metres diameter around it. For a seated dinner, plan on one heater per cluster of 15 to 20 guests. For a standing cocktail event where people move freely, distribute heaters throughout the space rather than grouping them. Wind exposure matters: an open, wind-exposed garden in Johannesburg needs more heaters than a sheltered courtyard at the same temperature, because moving air carries the warmth away faster. When you enquire, give us your guest count and describe the outdoor space — we’ll help you work out the right number rather than guessing.
Do you deliver and set up the gas heaters?
Yes. We deliver to your venue and position the heaters where you’d like them. Have an idea of placement before we arrive — it makes setup faster. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounds; fees are based on distance from our depot.
Can I collect the gas heaters myself instead of paying for delivery?
Technically yes, but mushroom patio heaters are tall, bulky, and awkward to transport safely — they need to travel upright or be secured carefully. You’ll need a bakkie, trailer or a large SUV, and you’ll have to manage the gas cylinder connection yourself. Most hirers find delivery the simpler choice. If you do want to self-collect, that’s not a problem as long as you bear the above in mind and come prepared.
Do the gas heaters need to be connected to electricity?
No — that’s one of the main practical advantages of patio heater hire for outdoor events. These heaters run entirely on gas cylinders, so there are no cables, no power points to locate, and no generator required. You can position them anywhere in a garden, on a terrace, or in an open courtyard. For outdoor events where electrical access is limited, gas heaters solve the heating problem cleanly.
How long does it take to set up the outdoor heaters?
Once we’re on-site, each heater takes around 10 to 15 minutes to position and connect. We do a safety check and a test run on every heater before leaving to make sure they’re all igniting and burning correctly.
Does someone need to operate the heaters, or can my guests manage them?
The heaters have simple knob controls and guests can adjust them without difficulty. What you do need is someone keeping an eye on things generally — not a dedicated operator, but an awareness that the heaters are running and a check that no one has moved them into an inappropriate position. If you’d prefer one of our staff on-site to manage the heaters throughout the event, that’s available as an add-on. Not included in the standard outdoor gas heater hire.
Are outdoor gas heaters safe to use at events?
Yes, when used correctly and in the right environment. The most important points: keep heaters on a flat, stable surface where they can’t be knocked over — an unstable heater is the main risk with LPG equipment. Maintain at least one metre of clearance from any fabrics, foliage, tent canvas, or other structures. The heating element at the top of the heater gets very hot during use; keep away from it. And the rule that must not be bent: these heaters are for open-air use only, not suitable for covered areas, or any enclosed space.
Can gas heaters be used inside a tent or enclosed marquee?
No — this is not a preference, it’s a firm safety rule. Gas heaters combust LPG to produce heat and emit carbon monoxide as a by-product. In an enclosed or poorly ventilated space — including marquees, tents, and covered patios with solid walls — carbon monoxide accumulates. LPG heaters are for outdoor, open-air use only. If you need heating inside an enclosed marquee or tent, ask us about alternative electric heating options when you enquire.
How long does a gas cylinder last on a patio heater?
A standard 9kg LPG cylinder runs a mushroom patio heater for approximately 5 to 7 hours, depending on the heat setting and model. At full output on a cold Joburg winter night in June or July, expect closer to 4-5 hours. On a medium setting in milder weather, the cylinder stretches further. For events running more than five hours, having one spare cylinder per heater is a reasonable precaution. We advise on cylinder quantities when you book based on your event duration.
How far in advance should I book outdoor gas heater hire?
Book early, particularly from April through August. Joburg and Pretoria winters make patio heater hire consistently popular during those months, and popular weekend dates — especially for garden weddings and outdoor corporate events — fill up several weeks in advance.
What kind of events are outdoor gas heaters suitable for?
Any event where guests are spending meaningful time outside on a cold evening. Garden weddings are the most frequent booking — Johannesburg evenings from April through August drop sharply after sunset, and guests in formal attire without heating tend to move inside and stay there. Outdoor corporate events, cocktail functions on rooftop terraces in Sandton, year-end parties at garden venues, and milestone birthday celebrations in Pretoria and Midrand all benefit from heaters positioned through the space. If your venue has a terrace, garden, or outdoor entertaining area and the event runs after 7pm between April and September, gas heater hire should be in your budget from the start.
How far apart should gas heaters be placed for even coverage?
As a practical starting point, space heaters 4 to 5 metres apart so their warming zones overlap slightly. In a long, narrow outdoor space — a verandah or terrace — a heater every 4 metres along the length works well. In a wider garden space, think in clusters: one heater per seating group or table cluster rather than trying to heat an open area from one central point. Our team will discuss placement with you when we arrive, and can advise based on your specific layout.
Can outdoor gas heaters be used in wet weather or rain?
Light rain is generally manageable — the heaters are designed for outdoor use. The gas connection and ignition components should not get soaked, and operating a heater in heavy sustained rain is not allowed. If your event is at an exposed location with a rain forecast, have a plan to shelter the heaters when not in use or to move guests under cover. Strong wind affects how effectively the heat radiates outward; positioning heaters with a natural windbreak behind them helps noticeably on windy Joburg evenings.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my gas heater hire booking?
Let us know in writing as soon as you can. Changes are accommodated up to two weeks before the event, subject to availability — the sooner you tell us, the better your chances of securing the new date. Cancellations more than 7 working days before the event qualify for a full refund. Cancel within 7 working days and the booking fee is non-refundable.
More about outdoor gas heaters hire randburg, johannesburg

Heater hire that keeps guests outside longer

Heater hire is the difference between an outdoor event that empties as soon as the sun drops — and one where guests stay relaxed, social, and comfortable well into the evening. On the Highveld, temperatures can fall quickly after sunset, especially in winter. Outdoor gas heaters take the edge off the chill so your patio, pergola, or garden seating stays usable (and your event doesn’t migrate indoors too early).

Because gas heater hire creates warm “gathering zones”, it also helps with flow: guests linger near the bar, snack tables and lounge areas instead of disappearing to their cars between moments.

Where heater hire works best

Heater hire is popular for:

- Garden weddings and outdoor ceremonies (especially in cooler months)
- Rooftop and terrace year-end functions around Sandton
- Milestone birthdays and family gatherings around Johannesburg and Pretoria
- Outdoor dining, cocktail hours, and lounge areas

A good layout usually uses clusters of heaters around where people naturally stand and sit (lounges, buffet lines, bar service, and entrances) rather than one “hero heater” on a wide open lawn.

Safety and placement (outdoor use only)

Our mushroom-style LPG units are for outdoor use in open-air areas. They should not be used inside halls, inside enclosed marquees, or in sealed spaces with limited ventilation.

We’ll confirm practical placement on delivery, but please keep sensible clearance from draping, umbrellas, and foliage so the heaters are effective and the setup feels tidy.

No cables, flexible placement

One of the biggest advantages of gas heater hire is that the units are gas-cylinder powered, so you can place them exactly where guests are gathering — without extension cords across the lawn or relying on venue plug points.

How many heaters do you need?

As a simple guideline, each heater creates a comfortable “warm zone” (rather than heating an entire venue). For large lawns or windy sites, it’s usually better to add one extra unit and build a few warm pockets than to spread heaters too far apart.

If you send a quick description of your venue layout (or even a rough sketch/photo), we can recommend a heater count that matches your guest numbers and timing.

Pairings that make outdoor events feel effortless

Heater hire pairs naturally with outdoor cinema hire for cosy movie nights, and it’s a great add-on next to a rustic bar hire so guests can enjoy drinks without rushing inside.
